Monday Musings

We just returned from our first bike ride of the spring - lovely evening for such an activity. It was beautiful yesterday, cloudy this morning, sunny mid afternoon, cloudy this evening, but still around 70 degrees. Perfect.

AND FINALLY!!!

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I had so many medical appointments in a few days? Remember how I bragged on the new mammogram equipment that wasn't so painful to me? Well, unfortunately, they decided they needed another look-see on the right side, so I had to go back up there for more intense squishing. I was in tears this time - because I was nervous about the outcome, because it hurt so much, and because I had to pay for this one! Not fun. The very good news - all was well - just some folding of some tissue.

Then my doctor forgot to order a thyroid test, so now I have to go up there again on Wednesday for some more blood drawn. Not happy about that. Oh, well.

Saturday was a busy day. Kristen was away on a retreat for her paralegal program - she had the chance to "bond" with the other students - since they all do the program on line, this was the first time most of them have met in person. She had a great getaway. But Care Bear had a Bible quiz meet - fortunately, in a church across town so we didn't have to travel far. They have been quizzing on Joshua, Judges, and Ruth this year - not the easiest books in the Bible! She is the youngest, and by far the smallest, quizzer. She did pretty well, and I have to say I would have to do a bit of studying to be able to answer the rather obscure questions they ask of these kids! I am so thankful she is hiding God's word in her heart. They go to Colorado Springs a week from Friday to spend the night in a hotel, then quiz statewide on Saturday. She's pumped about that. (Hmm. I think a trim of the bangs would be in order before that day!)

Saturday afternoon we had a luncheon to welcome our new pastor's wife, called "Hats Off to Rhonda." As you know from my "Easter Dress Parade" a couple of posts ago, I loved wearing hats as a teen. I haven't for years - partly because it didn't work out well when singing in choir (we used to wear robes), and partly because not many people wear them any more.

There is one lovely matron in our church who wore hats every Sunday for years. She is housebound now with her disabled husband, and problems of her own, so I asked if I could borrow a hat from her. Her DIL and I went to visit her on Friday afternoon and I tried on several:

I took this one home and wore it on Sunday with my yellow outfit - can't believe I forgot to have a picture taken!

I loved the elegance of this one, so I wore it to the luncheon.

Quite a few of the women chose not to participate in wearing a hat, but here are a few who did.

The little hats on the tables were made by "baking" styrofoam cups, then decorating them.

Rhonda was presented with her official "Red Hat", since she just had her 50th birthday.

It is such a small world - my friend Ruth (who broke her elbow the night before, but valiantly came and sang the song she was scheduled to do) had Rhonda's grandmother as her favorite Sunday School teacher ever back in western Kansas when she was in elementary school.

The only problem?? It was a salad and dessert luncheon. I didn't have time to make a dessert I could have, and nobody brought a salad that fit in with PRISM. I didn't get to eat much, but it was fun!

First...your flowers are beautiful! I'm so glad they're up!

I absolutely love hats, although I don't wear them as often as I did when I was younger. (oops...I just realized I had one on in my last post)

Do you belong to the Nazarene church? (You don't have to answer that.) I was just wondering because they also "quiz". We go to a Nazarene church, yet I grew up in an inter-denominational evangelical church. I'm still a "mutt" denominationally.

About your comment on my post. Yes, when one moves a lot (when young), it makes it hard to retain childhood friends. But I can see you have no shortage of friends now.

What a cute idea--that hat party to welcome the pastor's wife.

Yay for Spring!!! It's about time too, right?!

Kudos to Care Bear! I wish I'd grown up in a church where I had to memorize Scripture, but that was/is not done in the Catholic faith. Sad...I wish her much luck in her upcoming quiz meet!

Glad to hear the mammogram issue turned out to be "nothing" but sorry you had to go through it. It's unnerving, this I know!

Hats! Hate 'em!!! NEVER wear 'em! I have never had "hat hair" and they look totally ridiculous on me! But you carry them off nicely! Glad you enjoyed the luncheon, even on a bit of an empty stomach!

Have a blessed week, my friend!

Wow....bike riding. I remember one time we packed our bikes in the back of the pickup truck and drove clear to F C and biked along their Poudre River bike trail...wondering if they still have that there...it was a gorgeous place to go biking now that you reminded me of it.

And the hats...oh how I love the black hat you wore to the luncheon. You look absolutely stunning in it.

And those Styrofoam cup/hats...wow, that's a neat trick.

Pretty flowers, you know how much I love flowers and gardens. So, so pretty.

Good luck in Colorado Springs...Nah, I like her long bangs. She looks too cute.

So glad your spring is finally there and the flowers are adorned with their beauty.
The hat idea is a really cute one, even though I myself have never liked to wear them. I admire them on others but just not on myself. Not sure why.
So glad that Care Bear is in quizzing. I was cleaning out some stuff down in storage a week or so ago and ran across the quiz books from my time leading quiz there. It was Samuel that last year. And yes, some (if not most), of those questions can be obscure! The kids really have to go above and beyond to do well at the meets. More importantly, though, is that they are enjoying memorizing Scripture. I remember how much I learned from leading that group.

Enjoyed "catching up" with you, Dawn! You really have been busy! I'm glad your mammograms turned out OK and that's behind you for now.

I love, love the hats - especially the black one you wore! We're thinking of having a Hat Day on Mother's Day. The styrofoam hats are adorable; I may want the "recipe" for those in the future.

Our quizzers just finished their competitions recently. It's a wonderful program, and I'm glad your Care Bear is a part of it.

Your flowers are beautiful! Don't they just make you feel better?

Have a wonderful week!

Your flowers are gorgeous! It's so exciting when the flowers begin to bloom. Every year it's a thrill!

Good for Care Bear! That must be hard work, but I have no doubt she really enjoys the challenge!

So glad your mammogram turned out okay! But sorry you had to have a repeat performance! Ugh!

Love all the hats! (Especially the woman who wore the baseball cap!) What a sweet, unique idea!

You wear a hat really well. I never felt right in one but love to see them on others.

So proud of your little grand daughter and the Bible Quiz. Pray she does well at the state meet.

Isn't it wonderful when you start seeing Spring flowers popping up everywhere?! My crocuses all died because of the snow we had last weekend but my tulips and daffodils seem to be ok and look like they'll be blooming any day now:-)

Congrats to Care Bear for doing so well at the Bible Quiz meet! She's so tiny beside the other kids but just as smart:-)

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go for another mammogram but thank goodness it showed that there was nothing wrong.

Such wonderful hats you got to try on and borrow...LOVE that black one and it went so well with your dress! You look simply amazing:-) xoxo

Love those hats
I have never been much of a hat person, but I love them on other people. Does your little one study by herself for the bible quizzes or does her Mom help her? She is doing so good.
You are doing so good to stick with your special food choices even when there are none...lol..
sugar has got a hold on me right now. I think I am going to try and do so good at the start of every week...then something comes up...yikes...makes me crazy (o:

I think you have probably asked me a few questions that I never answer...that is because I don't do it right away then I forget to...sorry

So glad to hear the mammo results were negative! It has been almost 6 years now that my mammo came back with a different result - what a journey! But God is awesome and His healing power is amazing!
Yeah for Quizzers! I did it as a teen and both of my children were involved, all the way to the State level for several years. I believe these truths stay with them for a lifetime!

Oh Dawn - the hats are all just lovely. I think they can look so elegant when worn the right way. I wish I looked halfway decent in one.

I loved the cute styrofoam hats - such a clever idea!!!
