Today we woke up to a small snow accumulation - not enough, but better than none. The sun came out and most of it is gone, but there is a very cold breeze going through your bones when you go outside.
So - is anybody watching American Idol, Season 8? I must admit I'm addicted - I have watched it from the beginning this year. I have to say there have been some very poor decisions made, but the final group has finally been decided upon and tonight starts the countdown to the finale. I really like Danny Gokey and Michael Sarver because of their testimonies. I heard Michael say that he and Danny have a great time sharing their love for the Lord. They both work in the music ministry of their churches. Here's hoping Adam Lambert bites the dust first thing. And what's with that raucous red hair on the 16-year-old with the braces (that's a first!)
Since I'm on the subject of television - I discovered TCM recently - Turner Classic Movies. I watched "Roman Holiday" the other night - really fun. This week-end I happened upon the old Dr. Kildare movies - from back in the early 1940s.
I recorded 5 of them for future enjoyment. I watched the first one and I have to say - the medical field isn't anything like what was portrayed back then. I'm not sure I'll watch all of them, but it's kind of fun - I never really knew there was a Dr. Kildare before my teen idol.
Of course, that was long before he broke my heart by "coming out." I thought Richard Chamberlain was the cutest guy ever. I loved the show. Simultaneously, Ben Casey was another medical show that was popular. He was handsome in a darker way. He had a rather scratchy personality, where Dr. Kildare was the kind of doctor you'd want to have treating you if you were in the hospital.
Do you remember Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare shirts? I wanted one so badly, but we never had money for "foolish" purchases. We never got in on the fads until they were past their prime. If ever. The good news is that fads never lasted too long. Did you have a Nehru jacket? Same era. I never wanted one of those.
We didn't get a t.v. for quite awhile after others did. It wasn't only because were poor. I think I've told before about my dad fixing everyone's everything in the little town of Heber Springs, Arkansas, to keep food on the table. The church didn't pay much! We would always urge Dad to keep the repair t.v. sets until Monday so we could watch Saturday morning cartoons.
When we finally did get a set, we weren't allowed to watch too much - homework, church, chores all came first. But I remember my excitement when my English teacher assigned a paper based on a Dr. Kildare episode. I don't think my folks believed it was possible, but it was true.
I was also crazy about the theme song, Three Stars Will Shine Tonight. Oh, my word, what a tear jerker! I didn't remember that Richard Chamberlain actually sang it. Look what I found!
