Thursday Thoughts

This is what the mountains look like when the clouds finally lift - glorious beauty!

This is what it looks like when Grandpa and the big girls walk to church and the littles ride in the stroller - then the littles want to ride home in the van and the big girls decide to ride home with Grandpa --

Did anybody spot the bed on the top of this building in the previous post? I didn't see it until about the 20th time I looked at this picture --

This is how the mind of my Care Bear, my second grade grandgirl, works - she created this acrostic about Jesus, God, Savior, and Great God - some of it is a bit out there, but most of it amazes and thrills me -- double click to read it more easily.

This is how I think I felt when I got my first library card.

This is what happens when you leave two little two year olds alone downstairs for a few minutes too long. They got into the old checks, etc. I discovered that the checks go back over 10 years, so I think it's high time we did some serious shredding.

Last Friday afternoon, right after school, Care Bear was scheduled to jump in the church van with the other Bible quizzers from our church to head to Colorado Springs. Unfortunately, it was a bad weather day and there is one particularly bad spot in the highway between here and there called Monument Hill, which becomes treacherous whenever there is any ice at all. Besides that, many of the quizzers were coming from the western slope, which meant traversing mountain passes. So they postponed it until this week-end. Care Bear was so disappointed. I love it that she's in quizzing, but I have to say that I suspect the stay in the motel with a pool had a lot to do with her devastation. They're heading out tomorrow afternoon, providing we don't get a repeat of last week-end's storms.

Have you read any good books lately? I don't buy books any more, but rather put them on hold at the library. Often I'll have 9-10 books on order, and it seems that they all come in at once. I am very excited to read Jennifer Chiaverini's latest, and just finished Ann B. Ross' newest story about Miss Julia. Have you read them? Miss Julia is a "proper southern lady" who finds herself getting into a big mess in every book - of course, or else there wouldn't be a book! But they are getting a bit sillier every book, so I don't know how much longer I'll keep reading them. That is the same reason I've dropped Joanne Fluke and Janet Evanovich from my "must read" list.

Right now I'm reading Not MY Daughter by Barbara Delinsky. I have not heard of her before, but she has written several novels before this one. I saw this reviewed in a magazine, so thought I'd give it a try. It's about 4 high school girls who made a pact to get pregnant, one of whom is the daughter of the high school principal. It is well written and I'm hoping for a good ending.

Well, that's enough rambling for now. Have a great week-end!

I love your Care Bear's acrostics; it's very clear that she knows God is always with her! That's wonderful! I can tell she's been taught well, and I hope she enjoys and does well at her quiz meet.

Your mountain pics are gorgeous! One of these days we'd love to travel out your way again.

Have a great weekend! We'll be seeing the Phillips next week at our LA District Assembly, hopefully!

I'll be praying for Care Bear and her upcoming quiz...I'm so excited for her!! And hey - a dip in the pool never hurt any child's feelings ;)

Lately I've read a couple of fantastic books - both by women who have rowed (yes, rowed) across the Atlantic Ocean. One is called A Pearl in the Storm and was my favorite...talk about an adventurer!! The other is called Rowing the Atlantic. Not quite as dramatic, but still a good read!

Loved the mountain pictures...I remember when we drove cross country with the kids in 1992. Our first glimpse of the Rockies was amazing!

Have a wonderful weekend - I hope you have beautiful weather!

How's Kev feeling? And Kristin?

I love mountains - well you know that already, but yours are so beautiful! And the sky is so blue and clear too!
Love the post, Dawn, and Care Bear is quite a deep thinker, isn't she. Beautiful!
Jennifer Chiaverini is a favourite here too, but I have yet to read her latest 2 books - they are on the wish list for one day because they never appear in the shops and libraries here.
I have a serious amount of shreddign to do here. By the way, if you have a compost heap, putting a layer of shredded stuff between grass cuttings etc, works really well. That is where mine all goes now.
I hope the snow is gone and the sun is shining for you!

Good stuff!!! Love the mountains. That is one thing I truly miss about not living in NM.

The mountains are just gorgeous and still have so much snow. Those streams will be filled for all of the summer fun.

Care Bear's acrostics are just wonderful! Isn't it amazing how her mind thinks? Wishing her a great weekend at the quiz.

Yep....I can see that empty drawer play at my house too. Give them an inch and you will regret it!!!!

I am reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter right now. Interesting book.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

How I miss that mountain view out my window every morning! Thanks for sharing for us to enjoy.
Love Carebear's writing. Such an honest rendition of her childlike faith and belief. Oh, for her to hold steadfast to that knowledge. I know she was disappointed that the quiz got delayed but I remember the year I drove the girls to that same quiz meet and it was treacherous right there! We made it safely with lots of prayers but passed many accidents. The black ice was not the only problem - the fog was so thick that at times visibility was truly zero. Worst fog I have ever experienced and we had to pull over more than once; praying that no one else was pulled over in that same spot already - it really was that bad that you could not see at all!!

Okay, I know I say it over and over, but Care Bear is an extremely advanced writer. Isn't she in first grade? Did she write that piece entirely by herself? It's absolutely incredible. That girl is going to go places! :-)

LOVE the photo of the big girls in the stroller! So silly!

That book about the pregnancy pact sounds really good! I'll have to check it out!

Those mountains are just breathtaking Dawn. That's something we don't see here in South Texas :-)

I know what you mean about the library card!! I still buy books - but I do try to go to Half-price books whenever I can. Terrible vice...
I just read Francine Rivers newest book (there's a sequel coming). She is an excellent writer, but this one is so sad. I'm looking forward to the second book so everything can come right!
I love it when I find a new series I haven't read (if it's a good one).
Right now I'm reading a Maisie Dobbs book by Jacqueline Winspear. They are set in England right after the Crimean War. I really enjoy her books.
Have a wonderful weekend Dawn. Those sweet girls are getting so big.

I, like you, am getting most of my books from the library these days.
I have one close so why not take advantage of it.
My 10 yr. old granddaughter has a book in her hands all the time. So glad she loves to read
I hope Care Bear's quiz goes well.

Hello my dear Colorado buddy!! Wow...that snow-covered mountain is pretty against the blue sky, isn't it? And I can almost smell the fresh mountain air as I viewed 'em.

The checks strewn all over the room...funny, but not so funny for Grandma, I'm sure. Hey...I can laugh, I wasn't there.

The bed? On the cabin. Why SURE I SAW IT. You think I'd miss something like that? [well, honestly now...I did 'til you mentioned it]

Oh yes, and the question you posted in my comments re: the CO iris...they're spreading like crazy. But only the one bloomed this past winter. I think maybe I'm planting them to deeply...but boy when it rains around here, it RAINS and washes a lot of soil off...so, I'm playing it safe. I'm sure next year...the iris will be a'bloomin'!!!

Have a wonderful day, Dawn.

It looks like the twins are helping you declutter. :-)

I love getting books from the library. I love going in with no particular book in mind and browsing through the books. There are so many great books to read! I recently read "A Journal for Jordan" by Dana Canedy, which was good.
