Maine-ly For Fun, Part 6 - The Finale

Thanks for going on vacation with us - it has been so much fun to re-live it with you, my friends. As Gigi said, it will be kind of sad when the journey is over. And now I have to try to think of new things to write about besides.

The last day in Maine dawned bright and clear, after the two dreary, wet days. We decided to go back to Acadia National Park, specifically to Cadillac Mountain, which had been totally enshrouded in clouds last fall when we were there. It was a very windy day, but there were many people there on the mountain, from many states and countries - lots of different languages were being spoken.

DC took this one through his filtered sunglasses, just to see what would happen.

There was another cruise ship in the harbor that day, but not nearly so large.

We went back into Bar Harbor for some last minute souvenirs. The streets weren't as crowded with cruisers this time. We passed one more cemetery, this one in the middle of town next to a beautiful old church. Can you stand it?

Kevin had been waiting all week for a lobster dinner. We had passed numerous roadside places where we could see that lobsters were being cooked. We decided to eat at one of them rather than a fancy place in town. It was quite an interesting experience. No frills, low cost, good food. (Well, good food if you love lobster, clams, and crab legs).

I discovered I am not a real fan of lobster or clams (except in chowder) - I did enjoy the crab legs, and watching the guys loving every messy minute.

Not very appetizing looking, but kinda fun.

We had to return Kev to his house that evening, after getting a few things he needed. Then we headed back to Groovy's place to spend a very short night. Since we had to get up at 4:00, we only visited for a few minutes before we headed up the stairs to a few hours of sleep. We were on the road to Boston by 4:30, without waking up our hosts. We made great time, since it was a Saturday. That turned out to be a huge blessing. We got to the rental place (remember that story in Part 1?), they ordered us a cab and we had another interesting cab ride. We got to the airport in time for a bit of breakfast, had a flawless flight to Memphis (doesn't make sense to go from Boston to Memphis to Denver - who makes these nutso schedules?), had a really bad bbq sandwich in the Memphis airport (where I told DC I had lived there when I was a baby and Dad was in the Navy - he said he never knew that before), a nice flight to Denver, and an uneventful trip to the parking lot and on home. I love this view of the clouds, and the shadows made by them on the ground.

Two days later, Kevin called to tell us that we had missed the peak color in his neck of the woods, and sent this picture as proof.

The End!

Beautiful! And that food! Our favorite part of Maine is mid-Coast, especially around Camden, but it has been years! Also love Rockport.

Well, I guess all good things must come to an end...! I've really enjoyed your journey, your photos, your descriptions - so thank you for sharing!

And wow - that photo DC took through his sunglasses was fantastic - the colors were so vivid!

I'm so excited that you got to go up on the mountain! I didn't know that you did that and I really wanted you to see the view! That pic through DC's sunglasses is amazing, sure brings out all the colors. We now are way beyond peak after several days of heavy rain. :o( It still is beautiful though and it was in the high 60's yesterday!!! It's going back down this weekend so the kiddos will have to dress warmly to trick or treat. Glad you had such a great time in the 'ole state of Maine, I guess you can see why I love it here so much! xoxo

Lovely write-up, Dawn! And I was so glad you called us from the airport. I was really bummed that we didn't get to say Good-Bye in person!

Even if you missed the peak colors, Dawn, they were still beautiful.

The lobster and clams look fabulous to me. My mouth is watering just looking at that yumminess.

Glad the flight was uneventful - except for the bad bbq in Memphis. We used to love the Minuteman burgers in Millington when we lived there. I wonder if they are still in operation.

Must be time for lunch with all the food cravings from your post!!!!

What a great adventure you had and what great pictures. The weather is so nice today...can you believe it/ But alas there is the fire. Sounds like it will be out soon.

Glad you didn't have to do the dishes!

I've never been to Maine so it was fun to come along.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, you and me both. I'll pass on the lobster and the oysters too. Gimme a sweet, tender crab leg and I'm reeling in pleasure. Of course, the drawn butter helps too. LOL

The mountain is spectacular Dawn, I can see why you'd want to try again seeing it this time instead of hidden in cloud cover.

And the foliage I'm sure is pretty darned spectacular where YOU are right now too.

Oh, and one more thing....I'd much prefer the on the road, not so fancy smanchy eateries any ol' day. They're much much more homey.

Absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing...enjoyed the trip!

Not much for lobster, crab or clams myself, either.

Sometimes think airports everywhere have bad food. Think they believe chances are you will never be back, anyway, so the quality is not near what is should be. Memphis should have been a good BBQ sandwich.

Halloween

The night is dark
and the goblins are out,
and the witches and black cats
are prowling about.

And costumed creatures
the strangest I've seen,
are knocking on doors
'cause tonight's Halloween!

Happy Halloween dear Dawn:-) I so enjoyed reading about the final part of your trip...I'm not big on seafood but for those who do enjoy it, those plate fulls looked pretty good! Although it's a shame you missed the peak colours where Kevin lives, you still got to see some breathtaking scenery. A terrific trip all around:-) xoxo

What a wonderful vacation Dawn. I love the way you've shared it.
I am a huge fan of all that wonderful seafoody stuff - lobster, clams, shrimp......love it all!
My Aunts lived on a little Island off New London, CT when I was a little girl and I got an early start - even dug clams all by myself!
I keep saying this, but I really am so glad you had this special time. You more than deserve it.
