Kona Adventure - Part 10 - The Food

Almost three months have passed since we were in Hawaii, and I'm still trying to finish my journal of the trip. If you're tired of it, please feel free to skip this post. We've been fairly busy since the trip, and I feel like the Lord directed this vacation to prepare us and relax us for what was ahead. If you're new here, you might want to go back a few posts to see what I'm talking about. But a hint - the teeny tiny twins are 8 weeks old tomorrow, and are growing like little weeds.

I haven't met very many people who don't consider eating a great part of being on vacation. We like to stay at Bed and Breakfasts. Our hostess this trip gave us so much food for each breakfast that we usually took some with us for a mid-morning snack on our road trips around the island. I shared pictures in this post.

I showed one of our favorite lunch spots in an earlier post - the Coffee Shack. We were so happy to see that it was still there ten years later, with the soup and sandwich menu just as wonderful. We made it back there twice.

There was another place we loved ten years ago - The Keei Cafe. It was a little tiny place in a run down little building by the side of the road. We tried it because it was recommended by our hostess at The Dragonfly Ranch, where we stayed that year. We were really glad she recommended it, because it was not the kind of place we would have stopped, most likely. DC had the best pork chops ever, and had never forgotten them. We asked around and found out that they had moved up in the world, and were now down the road in a classier spot.
We knew we had to go there again, and were really glad we did. We were so pleased to learn that the same Brazilian chefs were still there, as was the same head waiter. We asked him about the history of their move. He pointed out that there was a picture of the old place on the wall:

At that time, when they were just getting started, they had 8 of those white plastic tables and chairs - the kind you buy at Wal-Mart for your patio. I had remembered it as even smaller than that. But they have really come up in the world - now their furniture is made from koa wood - the wood that DC loves to buy as souvenirs. It was just beautiful, and the food was still wonderful.

One day we decided to go to Safeway and buy picnic food. We went back to the great spot we'd discovered the first day (the same place I hurt myself). This created a much nicer memory!

I very carefully went into the water, warm enough for a bath. I was really paranoid about turning my ankle again.

One of our last days, we took the trip to the southernmost point of the U.S. We ate that afternoon in the southernmost restaurant. Very good food, very interesting little place - nothing fancy, but lots of personality.

Thanks for coming along with me once again. I hope to finish in about two more sessions!

Dawn,

Your photos are lovely. One day maybe I will get to visit Hawaii. Mom has been there and loved it.

Thanks so much for the comments on my post tonight. However, I made an error when posting Evan's weight. He came in at 7 lbs. 10 oz. My apologies.

Blessings,
Mary

Good Morning Dawn,
It is always so interesting to learn about the different kinds of foods at places you visit. I do love the view from the patio at the Coffee Shack. It is just breathtaking. The sandwich you have is a big sandwich. I probably couldn't have eaten all of it. The little Geicko is just cute and very colorful around his head. I've never seen one like that before. I bet they have all kinds of colors on them there in Hawaii. Sounds like the Keei Cafe has come a long way. I love the picture of it and the look of it now. I love plain and simple places to eat. I'm not a fancy person and had rather eat at a place like that as well. The picnic you and DC had looks so relaxing and serene. I haven't been on a picnic in years. I would like to go on one again. I am so looking forward to the rest of your Hawaii adventure. You know I have really enjoyed going along on the vacation with you. "THANK YOU" for sharing another day with us. The Christmas Tree in the Hana Hou looks very nice. I seen on The Weather Channel where it had been real warm out there and then turned cold and there was more Snow. We have had a very nice weekend here and it got up to 73 degrees here yesterday. Rain and the possibility of severe storms are in the forecast for today and then we may even get a light dusting of Snow tomorrow. I'm not getting my hopes of tho. LOL. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours.

Love & Hugs,
Karen H.

Oh Dawn, that is mine and Hubby's dream vacation. We will go together, just the two of us, The Good Lord willing! The pictures were great and I would love to have a picnic RIGHT THERE!

Beautiful pictures, Dawn. Food is always such an important part of our lives - even from biblical times - so this was a very appropriate post.

The geicko was such beautiful colors. I always enjoy the noise that they make. His coloring reminds me of one of those gorgeous frogs.

I am sure that after your wild weekend of weather you would appreciate those nice warm waters once more.

How fun! My hubby and I were seriously thinking about taking a trip to Hawaii this year, but opted for a cruise instead for April. We're pretty excited - we've never done that before! I love the Gecko! What bright colors! I look forward to the next story - not tired of it yet! :)
God bless you!

Dawn,
I'm back... and it was a great trip.
I love the twin pictures in the previous blog with such cute outfits.
It looks like you enjoyed the food as much as we did. I agree- it is one of my favorite things about vacations.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm so glad you had such a lovely vacation Dawn. You have had so much these past several months. You do such a great job with pictures. I could use a tutorial :-)
The Phantom was wonderful. We were in the last row of the balcony, but it is a fairly small theater and I could see everything. Loved it!!

Tired of Hawaii? Who could ever be tired of Hawaii! Not me who is thinking of changing her trip from Ireland to Hawaii but I don't know. Hubby has never been to Hawaii but he has been to Australia (after Viet Nam) so we will see. Lovely photos and Geckos are so cute... kiss, kiss! That is how they sound on glass!

Hugs!

That sandwich was worth the trip alone. I love that you had a picnic and turned a bad memory into a really nice one. Everything is so pretty there - what great pictures.

Thank you for a front row seat tour of this beautiful place. The flowers and the ocean are entrancing, but my favorite part was the little green creature stealing the show, and that Dagwood Bumstead sandwich; my kind of sandwich!.

Oh my, I think I own an apology here. Two little creatures recently joined the rest of us in the universe, and I'm talking about lizards and fattening sandwiches. I've been away much too long. Did not know the twins had arrived. Please tell your daughter I am so happy everybody's allright.

I love eating out, so trying new restaurants while on vacation is a highlight. It's nice too when you can get tips from locals that will point you to a place where you normally wouldn't go. The locals know where the great food is!
The amazing sandwich does look tasty!
